Guidelines for Foreign National Applying to Conduct Research in Malaysia

All foreign nationals intending to conduct research in Malaysia should obtain prior written approval from the Government of Malaysia. Applicants are advised to refer to the website of the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister's Department : www.epu.jpm.my for detailed information on the rules of application to conduct research in Malaysia.

In order for the application to conduct research to be considered, each member of the research group is required to complete the following forms which are obtainable at all Malaysian diplomatic missions abroad:

(a) Application to conduct research in Malaysia, EPU/Research Form 1 (application form can be obtained from the EPU or its website: www.epu.jpm.my );

(b) For Commonwealth citizens - Immigration Form IMM 12 Pin. 4/85;

(c) For non-Commonwealth citizens - Immigration Form IMM 47-Pin. 11/85; and

(d) Immigration Form BTK 100.

The duly completed forms together with the research proposal can be submitted to the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission abroad.

The research proposal must be written in English. An average of six months is normally required for the application to be processed.
